SKYWALKER TRAINING, PART I For the most part, athleticism in training is dying in this country. Challenge and the desire to face challenges have been slowly bled out from our idea of exercise primarily because it is not an easy “sell”. Long ago before the corporate gyms took over the small independents establishment and just as long before the embarrassment of the soft-core porn and drug magazines disguised with exercise were around – there was actually something called exercise and believe it or not, it was hard work. It was the type of thing that challenged you, pushed you to heights you didn’t think possible but equally taught you lessons that went farther in life. Basically while few in this deplorable business of health and fitness coaching have the sounding board or the intelligence to actually say it – this entire thing called exercise sure as hell better be about overcoming adversity…damn if I don’t feel like a dinosaur now. Oddly what went hand in hand with this new softer world of exercise was the development of the exercise machine. With what I believe is extremely noble intentions and often very sound “scientific” data, many engineers designed incredible pieces of equipment that would replace movements typically done with a barbell or dumbbell. Unfortunately unbeknownst to them at the time was that it would lead to far more than simply a mentally weak generation but physically individuals who couldn’t manage one of the most basic ideas in training, a part of the Renegade Concepts of Training™ - “teaching the body to move in a harmonious fashion.”. Expanding that further into more specific athletic goals of “being able to project, accept and re-direct maximum force” (another concept of Renegade Training™!) what as often occurred is that the most direct resistance method of improving something as basic Vertical Jump power is all but ignored. However through the start of this article series we will be reviewing how to return exercise to the challenge you need, the challenge you want and get you soaring!
