KETTLEBELLS, PART 1 It is a simple fact that few people want to admit nor mention but the present training world is a pale shadow of what existed in the past. The all-around athlete is rare breed and while you can cast blame in a variety of directions, much of it is firmly in the hands of the actual members of the training/coaching profession whose own level of experience, training knowledge and ability is so limited in scope that training mediums and protocols has changed to suit these very modest abilities. What has emerged in its place is not only a dumbed-down approach to training but a glorification of some movements as being intensely complex and difficult to learn. While this will definately not be a popular statement within the industry that is typically made up of "experts" with highly limited athletic experience and ability but quite honestly compared to many skills needed to excel in business world, learning the skill set needed to perform lifting movements is extremely simple once you follow a basic guideline. One of the most interesting mediums that has gained popularity of late that is not only highly effective in a variety of uses, incredibly transportable but also considered technically challenging is the kettlebell. The kettlebell is an extraordinary tool, pure and simple with very little if any negative concerns. It is an extremely affordable medium that offers the user tremendous latitude with their training and even the setting that they train in. For Coaches/Trainers it offers a fun and unique medium to train athletes/clients while avoiding the monotony that can often occur. It is a tremendous medium to teach and it implements proper hip thrust that is so important in virtually every major lift -- a truly superior tool to most training mediums in the acceptance of force and amongst its many other benefits, for advanced lifters it can be an astonishingly effective form of General Physical Preparation. However, while some might consider it so, kettlebell training is not complicated! In a soon-to-be released article series we will be reviewing the basics of kettlebell training and how you can take advantage of this extraordinary medium. As you will notice through this series, as you learn the Renegade way to execute kettlebell lifts you will be able to perform the lifts with much greater loads and quickly advance to performing as “doubles” (two kettlebells) plus adding additional weight on your trunk with the Xvest™ I recommend wearing the Xvest™ (as seen in photos) while lifting with KB’s (doubles preferred) for seasoned lifters who will likely require the extra resistance and wish to promote even greater development of their lower body.
Through this series we will go through not only the basics of kettlebell lifts but how you can develop explosive power and speed using many extraordinary lifts such as the Split Jerk.
In the Split Jerk, once the kettlebells are cleaned and into proper position (discussed in the upcoming series), you begin the drive phase of the lift with a slight dipping of the knees and then the powerful thrust up with your legs as if jumping, projecting the load upward as you simultaneously launch in the deep split lunge position and catch bells. With bells locked firmly upright “drive” back leg forward to standing position, lower bells while dipping at knees to softly accept force and begin next repetition.
