Founder, Renegade Training International

The industry vanguard, John Davies is the founder and creator of the Renegade concept of fitness, sport and life force coaching based upon his incredibly diverse background in business consulting, athletic coaching and artistic endeavors in various mediums. He is a well-known advocate of ethical practices in sport and lives a voracious life surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding around the world, defying age against those half his age. Additionally he has served as consultant behind-the-scenes in every level of sport from professional teams, to over 50 top NCAA institutions and hundreds of high school programs not only across the country but worldwide. Throughout the country’s Football community, the Renegade system is seen as and is the most influential training methodology as it is continues to produce unstoppable forces.

Mr. Davies is in the author of four highly regarded books ("Renegade Training for Football," "Xtreme Sports Training ~ Renegade Style," "R Factor for Golf" and "The Mark of R; Part II - The Rebirth of Honor") and over 600 articles ranging in varied topics such sport training, his love of skate and surf culture, dark noir, inspirational choices in life, dwindling corporate ethics, the slide of the health system in America and fund management. Many of his more thought provoking artistic voyages appear exclusively at renegadestyle.com, which is scheduled to gallery his artistic collection in 2006-2007.

The winter of 2005 will see the release of his next book, tentatively titled "She," an in-depth look at the destruction of body image, pornification and the abandonment of respect towards women in our culture. The following year, the anxiously awaited "Destined - The Renegade Chronicles" is planned to be released. Additionally he has appeared in nationally syndicated radio shows, over twenty major DVD productions and is the most sought after writer and spokesperson in the health and fitness industry. In the winter of 2004, the re-tooled R-Style apparel of young women's and men's clothing line emerged under his design eye and quickly became an underground success.

In the fall of 2004, he launch the Renegade Certification Program for fitness, health and business professionals to teach the "R" philosophies, and to use one of the company’s mottos "make a difference." Quickly this program has grown by leaps and bounds and like all Renegade systems is a defiant success. This summer/fall of 2005 he has turned his attention to developing the first dedicated Renegade personal and executive training services located in New York. These services will provide individual and customized training and coaching services for discretionary business leaders with focus on personal health, team management, motivation, diet management, and a wellness regime that will not only fuel continued career success but life enrichment.

COMPLEX CHOICES

The driving sounds of the rain pound a Gene Krupa beat against the window, over and over, never stopping, never relenting so I get up early to wait for dawn to appear. There’s a curious strain in the shoulder, a screaming pain in the ankle that beckons attention that I won’t hear but there is no time for this, there just is not enough time anymore and so I make the illogical if not obstinate decision. Time will have to wait for its victory march another day, age will not be bowed to quite yet and so today I push on.

Steaming hot, the morning java is received anxiously. Hands circle, roughly caressing the paper cup as I roll into our dark, dank training room. Time is rare, time is wasting, (damn is there enough time left) as I begin into the first round of complexes.

Complex training fits the needs perfectly right now as it is a precise elixir of strength, speed, and flexibility in a highly time-efficient and hell-bent manner, like a drive through the darkest night. The cold iron plates have almost a mildew sweat over them as the bar is loaded. There is no pain, no time, nothing other then this. It’s about to begin.

Editorial review points: previously published by John Davies
Renegade Style training often makes use of training complexes as they enhance power and force production, whilst teaching the body to work in a single harmonious fashion but additionally in a highly time efficient manner. Not simply for the competitive athlete, training complexes can vary in technical demands yet the benefits are always pronounced as complexes infers benefits to the total physiological system that creates a greater foundation for other work to build on.

One of the most well known complexes used within Renegade Training has been affectionately titled “The Bear.” The Bear is a broad based complex that works in the following order (a) Power Clean-hang position (b) Front Squat (c) Push Press (d) Back Squat and (e) Push Press for yes, one single repetition. Now beyond some draconian idea that I created this as “the ultimate payback” in fact it is based upon the idea of balanced development and recognizing the simplistic look of most lifts being pushing, pulling and squatting emanating from proper postural alignment. Movement generated properly is the key!

In Mad Science 1 & 2 we revealed the key, if you can call it that, in performing “the Bear” is the proper execution of these three complexes in a proper fashion:

i. Power Clean - hang (PC) to Front Squat (FS)
ii. Front Squat (FS) to Push Press (PP)
iii. Back Squat (S) to Split Jerk (SJ)

From there sets/reps scheme are performed in what I have loosely termed as “ascending” and “descending” order whereby the “focus” of each complex is performed 6 total reps broken in a unique fashion. As an example, in a typical “2:1 ascending” set:

Power Clean (PC)/Front Squat (FS): perform 2 reps of the PC, followed by 1 rep of the FS, then repeat this order three times to complete the set. In this manner the “focus” of the complex (PC) is performed for a total 6 reps. This precise structure is followed in the two additional complexes.

In a “1:2 descending” set the same PC is performed for one rep, followed by 2 reps of the FS and then further repeat the entire set 3 total times. In this manner, the focus of the complex, now the FS is performed 6 times.

From there we move to “3:1 ascending” sets:

PC/FS – perform 3 reps of the PC, followed by 1 rep of the FS and repeat this structure once more to complete the set. In this manner the focus of the complex (the PC in this instance) will again be performed 6 times.

And in a “1:3 descending” sets:

PC/FS – perform 1 rep of the PC, followed by 3 reps of the FS and repeat this structure once more to complete the set. In this manner the focus of the complex (the FS in this instance) will again be performed 6 times.

The structure of the training session is to complete 12 total sets (like all R style sessions) but uniquely that no single set is the same as the prior and complete balance in training.
