5:30 A.M.
5:30 right,
yeah, see ya then…
5:30 a.m. comes along, still dark, grab my board, head to the spot,
meet-up with D, pick up a couple of seriously immense coffees, one black,
one with cream just as I see D. We sit, amp up on coffee, grab a refill
and head down to our favorite break. Lay down some more wax, throw on
a somewhat dry definitely aromatic rashguard, crush the last of the second
cup and paddle-out into a mellow break for an early morning session.
Hang out on our boards, watching, waiting, fight a nasty current every
minute pushing us into the pier, talk about serious matters, life, politics,
fajitas and notice a new companion who has joined us as the sun rises.
Early morning drifts on, waves are nothing to brag about but still we're
out here not there, we head in to start the days work and training and
we notice our new friend seems to miss us and waves goodbye with its
ominous dorsal fin as we stretch down on shore. Make our way out, debate
about still more coffee but settle on some breakfast. Head off down to
the Etnies bowl just a little before the opening bell, meet up with some
of the normal skate crew, work the old lines, find some tasty new ones,
tearing-it-up just a bit more then it tears us up in the hot, hot sun
and after an hour and change, grab some more cold water and head deeper
into the hills during this freakish heat wave to train.
The spring/summer had been a rough period where
I had publicly concealed a somewhat litany of injuries from a few too
many free-falls from 10
feet. The shoulder capsule had been devastated but my recovery had been
well ahead of schedule if not somewhat miraculous. But that's rehab work
and while pushing the boundaries, still not bringing it. Reaching into
my bag-of-tricks, I knew I had to roll the clock back just one more time
to get where I wanted to be for my upcoming book shoot "The Mark
of R." My shoots are never a poser session, chuck the makeup and
precious lighting aside and to hell if I wasn't going to go out with
six guns blazing. So the natural selection was to call upon one of my
not-so-old 'ballers to join me in training. And so with little fanfare
the 5:30 a.m. sessions got rolling as we turned it up to the infamous
eleven.
D had joined me what three or is it four years
ago - damn, not that long ago. A sewer rat amongst the Bergdorf set
but endeared himself 'cause
the SOB outworked, outlasted every damn pretty boy. In time his commitment
shined through, his dedication just outlasted others and he's now passing
it on to a line of young bucks. So here we are training outside in the
blazing heat with nothing being held back. The work is advanced, brutally
nasty with plenty of unique never-before-seen med ball work, explosive
lifts, bodyweight movements and well…even a bit of bare-knuckle
sparring. In fact, a bit reminiscent of what is now 20 years past, pure
archaic training, the type of real smack found in the upcoming "Mark
of R" and so the clock gets rolled-back one more time. In the next
few weeks, he'll be joining my in NYC for the inaugural R Certification
as we lay down some footage for a new DVD but until then…
gotta run, 5:30 comes early.
